When I was planning our baby boy’s nursery, I knew I wanted something that felt personal and not just another perfectly beige nursery that looked like it came straight from a catalog.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a pretty nursery. But I also wanted his room to feel like him, like us, and like it had a little personality. Somehow that turned into a vintage garage-inspired nursery, and honestly? I still love it.
It’s not overly babyish, it’s not too themed in a cheesy way, and it has a good mix of cute, practical, and sentimental pieces. It feels like a room he can grow into a little bit, which was important to me.
The Vintage Garage Theme
The whole room is built around a vintage garage / diesel/ car theme with darker green walls (Behr Thai Basil), warm wood tones, metal signs, old-school gas station details, and little car/truck accents throughout.
I didn’t want everything to match perfectly. I think that’s what keeps it from feeling too “theme-y.” Instead, we used a mix of vintage-style signs, car decor, books, stuffed animals, and practical storage pieces that all kind of worked together.
The green walls ended up being such a good choice because they make the room feel cozy without feeling too dark. The wood crib and shelves warm everything up, and the garage-style decor gives it that fun boy-room personality without being too cutesy.
The Toolbox Changing Table
The biggest conversation piece in the room is definitely the toolbox changing table.
Instead of a traditional dresser, we used a rolling toolbox with a wood top that we got from Harbor Freight, and I’m so glad we did. It fits the theme perfectly, but it’s also actually useful.
Right now, I keep diapers, clothes, and bibs in the drawers. The drawers are easy to open, everything has its own place, and it gives us a ton of storage without taking up a huge amount of space.
It also makes the room feel a little more unique. I know it’s not the typical nursery dresser setup, but that’s kind of why I love it.

The Crib Wall
The crib area is simple, but it’s one of my favorite parts of the room. The wood crib looks really nice against the green wall, and the personalized-style sign above it gives the space a finished look. The sign is custom from the Etsy seller IronExile.
The crib bedding ties in little car details without making the whole room feel too busy. I like that the theme is there, but it doesn’t scream at you.

The Nursery Chair + Cozy Corner
This corner is honestly one of my favorite parts of the room, mostly because of the chair. I am obsessed with it. It’s so comfortable, it swivels, it rocks, and it’s electric which felt like a little extra, but now I fully understand why people care so much about a good nursery chair.
We’ve used this chair for feeds, contact naps, bedtime routines, middle-of-the-night wakeups, and honestly just sitting in his room because it’s cozy. If there’s one thing I would tell someone not to cheap out on, it’s the nursery chair. You spend way more time in it than you think you will.
I also love how the tire-style rug and the throw blanket makes this little corner feel tied into the garage theme without being too much. It gives the room some fun detail, but it still feels cozy and baby-friendly.
The curtains were another detail that helped pull the room together. The vintage gas station-style valance adds so much personality, and the black curtains help balance out the darker theme of the room. I didn’t want the nursery to feel too bright and babyish, so the curtains were a nice way to keep the room feeling warm and a little more unique. The pull down black out curtains were a must for naps during the day.
A Quick Note About the Crib Bumper
You’ll probably notice in the photos that we do have a crib bumper. I know crib bumpers are one of those things people have strong opinions about, so I just want to be honest about why it’s there.
Our son was constantly getting his arms and legs stuck through the sides of the crib while he was sleeping, and it started to feel like its own safety issue. We ended up using a breathable mesh-style bumper for that reason.
That being said, this is not me telling anyone else what to do. Safe sleep recommendations generally say to keep the crib bare, so definitely do your own research and talk with your pediatrician if you’re dealing with the same issue. This was just one of those real-life parenting decisions we made after weighing what was happening in our own house.
The Shelf Wall
The book shelf is where we keep a mix of books, stuffed animals, toys, and a few sentimental things. This is one of those areas that definitely changes over time, but I like having a place where everything can land.
It’s not perfectly styled 24/7, and I’m fine with that. It’s a real nursery. There are toys, books, keepsakes, random baby things, and probably something I meant to put away three days ago.
But that’s also what makes it functional. Our son is able to easily get to his books and stuffies whenever he pleases.

The Little Details That Made the Room
Some of my favorite parts of the nursery are the smaller details: the vintage gas station-style valance, metal signs, car accents, little trucks, wall decor, and the way the darker green walls make everything feel cozy.
A lot of the decor came from Hobby Lobby and Temu, which made it easier to pull the theme together without spending a ton. I didn’t want every single piece to match perfectly, so I just grabbed things over time that felt like they fit the vintage garage vibe.
I also love that a lot of the room doesn’t feel overly “baby.” It still feels sweet, but it has enough personality that it won’t feel outgrown immediately.
That was kind of the goal: a baby boy nursery that felt fun and personal, but not like I’d have to redo the entire room the second he got older.

What I’d Do Again
I would 100% do the toolbox changing table again. It fits the room, it’s practical, and it gives us way more useful storage than a lot of traditional nursery dressers.
I’d also keep the theme loose again. I think the reason I still like the room is because not every single item is a matching garage/car item. There’s enough of the theme to make it clear, but it still feels like a normal room.
Lastly, I would absolutely get the same style of nursery chair again. The electric recline, swivel, and rocking features have been so worth it, especially during those newborn nights and bedtime routines.
Final Thoughts
This nursery ended up being one of my favorite rooms because it feels personal. It’s not perfect, it’s not minimal, and it’s not trying to look like every other nursery online. A lot of the decor was found affordably through places like Hobby Lobby and Temu, and I think that’s part of what made it feel more collected and less cookie-cutter. I tried to link everything but some things (mostly on Temu) seem to be no longer available. I also want to note I have blurred the name signs for privacy.
If you’re planning a baby boy nursery and want something different than the typical soft blue or beige theme, a vintage garage nursery is such a fun idea. You can go as subtle or as themed as you want, and there are so many ways to make it feel personal.
